My last talk at the United Grinding (with the help of John Kelly) was on chatter. What a monstrous subject. I told the audience there are 4673 different types of chatter. I then explained the complex origins of “workpiece regenerative self-exited chatter”. Did they understand it? Some may have. But it takes a long time to understand chatter from first principles. Then, I gave a practical piece of advice: “If you have chatter in cylindrical-plunge grinding, try decreasing workpiece RPM by 45%. That might just make your chatter go away. . . . . Except when it doesn’t. But it’s something to try. 120 RPM to 65 RPM. I also explained how that will increase workpiece temperatures. But our problem isn’t temperature. Our problem is chatter. That chart shows that decreasing workpiece RPM (which increases effective depth) moves you to the left and up on the curve. That might just get you out of the chatter zone.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY C.O.R.E. ?? Today, exactly 10 years ago, the technical heads of UNITED GRINDING made a pact to start a unified digital future and to develop a common digital backbone for all our products and technologies – the C.O.R.E. initiative was born! In respect to the 10th anniversary of C.O.R.E., here a brief flashback: In 2014, we were confronted as a group with the question of how to deal with Industry 4.0. Across the group, we had a wide variety of CNC control platforms, hundreds of machine panel variants, thousands of man-years of software application code, all completely different and brand-specific, a real patchwork foundation! We came to the conclusion, that if we wanted to address the issues of Industry 4.0, it would only make sense if we approach them together as a group. Furthermore, it became clear that we can only achieve a real customer advantage if we develop a harmonized and modern machine tool interaction concept across all brands with a new and common digital core system for all technologies and machines. Between 2016 and 2017, the conceptual foundation for a joint hardware and software concept was laid. In 2017, the first coding work of the new common operating system core.OS started with a small core group of software developers. Over the next years, additional software developers were steadily integrated into the initiative. In 2019, the entire group was then covered and involved. At EMO 21 in Milano, C.O.R.E. was presented the first time to the world on the high-end machines. Until the end of 2023, C.O.R.E. was rolled-out to all CNC-platforms and the whole machine portfolio of UNITED GRINDING was transformed. With that, the digital journey of C.O.R.E. is not completed, it has just started! With outstanding collaboration and teamwork across all brands, we have created a unique digital core system. We laid a digital foundation for modern machine tools that will ensure our success as a group for the next decades. As of now, we can take full advantage of our synergies and everything we develop together will be usable by everyone and will make us even stronger as a group and set us apart from competition. What we see today from C.O.R.E. is just the starting point - we have strategic plans and ambitions for the next upcoming years, which will open up a completely new manufacturing world to make our customers even more successful in the future! C.O.R.E. is an investment in the future success of our customers, and therefore the greatest customer benefit in itself.
